Davao Teen Center and WARAYA Youth Org meet at Catbalogan, Samar

Last May 22, 2008, the youth coordinator of DTC and FPOP Chapter Program Manager visited the FPOP Samar for an official trip of the chapter. In line with organizational strengthening, they both decided to visit them just to hear insights from their experience in the said city.

Remembering the history of DTC, WARAYA is one of the fruit of the center's initiative to empower the young people to be involve in the management of the FPOP at the same time incorporating young people perspective in its implementation of program.

We have talked on the members WARAYA like Ador, Dennis, Roldan, Steph, Leonor and other 3 members (I forgot their names, SORRY..:D). They just shared their thoughts that WARAYA is still in the right track. Despite of the low membership turn-out and less financial support from the funding agencies, which are very common in developing organization, continuous planning of activities is being practiced as part of their local implementation of plans and advocacy.

One distinguished asset of WARAYA is that one of their member is a very known personality of Catabalogan. Steph, which is a peer counselor of the organization, is a daughter of Mayor Tekwa. In addition to this, in her very young age, she became the youngest barangay captain of Catbalogan and also became the youngest ABC President of the said city. Thus, making her the youngest Councilor of the city. This seems very fortunate for WARAYA but then again, it becomes liability of others since young people in the other organization of Samar tend to conclude that she is using this opportunity and WARAYA is taking this advantages to cover WARAYA's expenses.

Despite all of these, WARAYA is still coping with some of the criticisms and continue giving their services to young people. In fact, one yearly activity that WARAYA conceptualized, which eventually they admitted that it is because of DTC's initiative, is the celebration of YOUNG PEOPLE's Day every month of August.

Upon hearing all these insights and thoughts, it just made us to realize that there are still more to do. It doesn't mean that we should not take our relaxation but to manage our time to fulfill the aspect of our social being. It quite hard to do this but eventually, seeing the smiles and hearing the thank yous of our fellow young people will make it more easier and self-fulfilling.

Thank you FPOP - Samar for your accommodation and double thank you for WARAYA's inspiring story.

International AIDS Candlelight Movement and Mobilization (IACLM)

It has been an annual international event when the world commemorates the victims of HIV and AIDS. Since 1983, when the first case of AIDS reported in the country, national and local initiatives were made just to stop the said virus. It is definitely deadly and very discreet in killing people in nature.

Since the discussion of sex was put in the closet by the people, person who lived with this virus cannot express that he/she has this kind of problem and possible spread it to other people because of vengeance and pity. (Not all People Living with HIV has this contention.) That is why, the cycle of this virus is rampant yet not visible to the eye of vulnerable people like young people and children.

In fact, there were report of 21 cases in Davao City as of the first quarter of this year. There are also 95% young people who knew AIDS BUT doesn't know the real cause, services and other correct and right related things about AIDS.

That is why, to commemorate the victims, the local government and non-government organization made an initiative, through Davao City AIDS Council (DCAC) to celebrate the second to the last sunday of the month of May as International AIDS Candle Light Movement and Mobilization (IACLM).

Davao Teen Center (DTC) consistently participated the said activity to join the call of stopping the virus and spreading the good news!

SO LET US START TO SPREAD THE NEWS and NOT THE VIRUS!

Pictures of the IACLM are available at our Pictures section. Go! Go! DTC!

Press Release - YOUNG PEOPLE SUPPORTS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (RH) PROGRAMS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Davao Teen Center supports repro health programs of local gov't

Friday, 02 May 2008 02:05

DAVAO CITY (Davao Teen Center/30 April) -- Davao Teen Center (DTC) strongly expresses their support on the programs of local government to address the Reproductive Health issues of the city and greatly challenges civil society to support the said programs as this is the long hope of young people when it comes to accessibility of the reproductive health services of the city.

Jamail Lunar Macla, Youth Coordinator of DTC, expressed that the local initiative of passing and approving the Local Development Plan for Children (LDPC) in the local legislative manifests the firmness of local leaders that reproductive health is more than moral issue and societal issue.

"LDPC lambasted the idea that reproductive health must not only be seen as moral issue but encompasses all issues of the society which includes economic, cultural, emotional, social and physical well-being of an individual." Macla said

"The society must note that LDPC doesn't only tackle reproductive health concerns but also the welfare and best interest of the child like his/her participation, survival, protection and development rights." Macla added.

Liezle Orcullo, President of DTC, claimed that despite of the influence of some notable sectors, before the presence of the LDPC, adolescent reproductive health issues are rampant and visible such as abortion, early sexual exposure, and other risky and irresponsible sexual behaviors, which concluded that previous framework, discouraging sex education in school curriculum, stigmatizing sex and gender in the community and being blind and deaf to youth's problem in RH, is not an effective strategy.

"We talked and discussed it with our members at the center and commonly they contended that stigmatizing and keeping the discussion of sex and gender behind the closets is not an effective strategy since it will just make misconceptions and misunderstandings among the youth." Orcullo claimed.

"Although it was seen in the statistics that media greatly influences the youth in terms of their actions, however, in the other hand, it is much more effective if their immediate groups, family, church and community, will provide accessible and available assistance and guidance through correct information and education to their sons and daughter for them to understand the reality." Orcullo added.

They both concluded that the discussion of sex and gender encompasses sexual knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviors of individuals and also tackles various dimensions including anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the sexual response system; identity, orientation, roles and personality and thoughts, feelings, and relationships which are influenced by ethical, spiritual, cultural and moral concerns.

"RH is not only being moral but it is being human and humane to all citizenry where you let them choose to informed options based also on the availability and accessibility of correct information and education that was given by all stakeholders in the society, which includes media, family, peers, academe and church." Macla said.

"Reproductive Health is a reality, hence, it must be discussed objectively and healthily as a fact of life and in order to achieve reproductive health friendly community, the citizen, regardless of sex, gender, religion, race, age and etc., must embrace and understand the beauty of life and all things that God gave to us, including our reproductive health." Orcullo concluded.

another press release from sunstar davao - issue date, may 02, 2008

Youth backs city health programs

THE City Government of Davao has seen an ally in its tiff with the Church regarding the controversial Local Development Plan for Children (LDPC) ordinance, which the Church said promotes abortion and use of unwarranted birth control methods.

In a statement, the Davao Teen Center (DTC) strongly expressed their support on the programs of the local government to address the reproductive health issues of the city. They challenged civil society to support the programs, as this is the "long hope of young people when it comes to accessibility of the reproductive health services of the city."

Jamail Lunar Macla, youth coordinator of DTC, expressed that the local initiative of passing and approving LDPC manifests the firmness of local leaders that reproductive health is more than moral and societal issue.

"LDPC lambasted the idea that reproductive health must not only be seen as moral issue but encompasses all issues of the society, which includes economic, cultural, emotional, social and physical well-being of an individual," Macla said.

"The society must note that LDPC doesn't only tackle reproductive health concerns but also the welfare and best interest of the child... like his or her participation, survival, protection and development rights," she added.

Macla said the issue is not just all about morality.

"Reproductive health is not only being moral. It is being human and humane to all citizenry where you let them choose to informed options based on the availability and accessibility of correct information and education that was given by all stakeholders in the society, which includes media, family, peers, academe and church," Macla said.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte earlier branded the policy of the Roman Catholic Church on human population as "antiquated and archaic".

Duterte also appealed to the religious sector to give the City Government a chance to prove that LDPC would be beneficial to society in general.

The mayor clarified though that he does not want to pick a fight with the Church, despite the threat by Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla that supporters of the controversial ordinance would not be given sacraments.

"Dili ko gusto makig-away sa obispo, dili ko makigdebate nila. Di pud nako gusto na masilo sila sa akoa (I will not fight with a bishop, I will not debate with them. I also don't like to offend them.) But the truth is their policy is archaic, antiquated. I believe that children are gifts from God. Pero let us also see what we are doing to these gifts from the Lord," Duterte said.

He said with the increasing human population, not just in the Philippines but in the entire world, the earth's resources would soon run out.

Duterte said he would craft the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the ordinance. He will assure the Church that their ordinance would not favor abortion, as feared by the religious sector. He also said that he is in favor of tubal ligation, as this prevents the fertilization of egg.

"The Church should realize that they should begin now to study the real situation and reconsider. Makasabot man ang Ginoo ana ba, after all He is the one who created the earth," Duterte said. (BOT)
